Escape Game Secrets To Success: How To Escape The Room
If you’re looking for something fun to do around Atlanta these days, you may run across an escape game or two. Escape games are popping up everywhere around town. They are the latest craze and frankly, a heck of a lot of fun, but there are a few things you should know before you venture into this brave new world. While it’s all about the fun and games, it’s always helpful to have some inside info about all the fun and games. Otherwise, you might just be setting yourself up for failure.
What’s An Escape Game?
If you’re new to the concept, it’s really quite simple. Imagine you and your closest friends escorted into a room that has a specific theme- a spy theme, a mummy theme, etc. You’re given a backstory that matches the theme and you’re given exactly 60 minutes to find all the clues and solve all the puzzles in order to escape the room.
Sounds simple doesn’t it? Now, toss in the little fact that most escape rooms have an average of a 30% success rate. Nothing like an evening of failure to have a good time, right?
That’s why we thought it’d be helpful if we gave you some helpful tips that would lead you down the path to success. We’re rooting for you to be the hero and escape the room!
Have A Plan
To be successful in an escape room, like anything else, it’s always smart to have a plan. This can be tough if you’ve never been to an escape game before- you have no idea what to expect. The simple fact is this- you will be solving problems. It’s not like Calculus homework, but you’re going to have to use your brain and, gasp, you’ll have to do it without Google’s help! Typically, cell phones aren’t allowed, and they wouldn’t help even if they were.
So, how do you develop a plan? The best approach is to establish small groups that are flexible based upon the skills that people feel they have. For instance, if you have someone who’s great at number puzzles, you’d obviously want them taking the lead on something involving numbers. If you have someone who has a knack for word problems, put them on any of those that you might encounter. Briefly talking about a plan is a good way to get a leg up on escaping. Plus, if you talk about your approach beforehand, it saves you precious time once the clock starts.
Players often don’t realize that once the game begins, time is ticking away. This means all the time it takes to get organized is coming straight off the time it takes to solve things. That’s why getting a plan beforehand is helpful.
Communicate. Communicate. Communicate Some More
If you go into the escape room with just a few people, you may find that others join your group. This means you’ll be working with strangers to escape. For some, this can be a problem, but to be successful, you’ll have to communicate with the other players. Otherwise, you risk people working on the same things or wasting time in other ways.
Groups who have successfully escaped often call out when they’ve found a clue or if they’ve solved something. This helps move the group along as a cohesive unit rather than just a bunch of solo players.
One of the biggest blocks to being successful in an escape room is when people hold on to critical information. Often, one puzzle may lead to another. That’s where good communication can save time and get your team bragging rights.
In business and school, we’re often told “Work smarter not harder.” This is certainly true when working together in an escape game. One of the areas where we see people struggle the most is an individual will take on the task of solving a puzzle and get stuck. This is common, but rather than ask for help or let someone else have a try, they’ll stubbornly continue at it.
Here’s the thing- we all have our skills and weaknesses. A fresh set of eyes can move things forward, so there are times when letting others in on the problem can move the entire group forward. Letting go of pride and stubbornness is a great way to work smarter.
Don’t Bunch Up
It’s hard to decide how your team will work before you go in to an escape room, but once the game begins, it’s a good idea to spread the talent. This means one part of the group can focus on one aspect of the room while another can focus elsewhere.
It’s a simple concept that if you have 6 people in an escape room all working on the same puzzle then you’re probably overlooking necessary parts of the rest of the room. That’s where leadership needs to develop and help assign tasks. If you can assign tasks according to talent, even better, but this may not always be possible especially if you’re playing with people you’ve never met before.
These are just some of the things we’d recommend to help you be successful in our escape games. There are probably other characteristics and traits that help success as well, but this is enough to get you started.
We build this list after talking to the hundreds of players who have come through our escape games here at Three Keys. We’ve been open over 2 years now, and we consistently get outstanding reviews on Google. Why? Simple. We have rooms that are well decorated and we facilitate the fun. Some escape rooms put you in a room that’s barely decorated, tell you the theme and give you puzzles. If you get stuck, you stay stuck. At Three Keys Escape Games, we’ll give you up to 3 “keys” or clues to help move your group along.
